Trust Me Evidence Under Fire #2

Rachel Grant2023
Taken hostage by terrorists, an archaeologist must risk everything when a SEAL attempts to rescue her too soon… Archaeologist Diana Edwards is on a mission to uncover the link between artifact trafficking and terrorism. Just when she’s making progress, she’s kidnapped and forced to work for the very people she’s trying to stop. The nightmare deepens when she discovers the man who arranged her abduction is a terrorist everyone believes to be dead. A team of SEALs is sent in to save her, forcing her to make an impossible choice if she wants to stop looted artifacts from being used to fund brutal attacks across the globe. Navy SEAL Chris Flyte has one job to do, but the hostage won’t cooperate, endangering him and everyone on his team. After he completes the mission and Diana is safely on American soil, her story of abduction and being forced to dig becomes suspect. But when she shows up on his doorstep saying she’s seen one of her abductors, Chris has to wonder if the archaeologist is lying, or if a terrorist has followed her home.

Archaeologist Dr. Diana Edwards is kidnapped from her dig site by one of the world's most notorious terrorists. Instead of allowing herself to be rescued, she risks her life to stay in hopes of finding a way to bring him to justice. However, after months in captivity, very few believe Diana's story except for the Navy SEAL, Chris Flyte, who tried to save her once and succeeded the second time around. Chris isn't sure what to believe, especially when his attraction to the beautiful doctor gets in the way of his better judgement. He just knows that if he stays close to her, she will show her true colors, one way or another.

Trust Me starts out with a bang. Diana is kidnapped and chooses to stay behind to find a Bin Laden type terrorist. Rachel Grant's knowledge of archaeology plays a big role in this part of the story, but once the romance between the two protagonists begins, the pacing of the story becomes uneven and the lack of character development becomes evident. By the middle of the book, the narrative starts to drag and the number of characters from previous books clogs an already bloated plot. If the novel had maintained the momentum achieved at the beginning, it would have been much more successful. Overall, Trust Me is one of Rachel Grant's weakest books to date.

This series just goes from strength to strength.

Diana has been working on Jordan, helping to catalogue on an archaeological dig. But unknown to the Government she is also there to help thwart relic traffickers. When she is kidnapped in broad daylight, she is forced to help dig illegally. But when her chance for escape comes, she shocks her rescuer by helping her captors get away.

Chris is the Navy SEAL sent to help rescue Diana and he is shocked when she signs for him to trust her. Trust her - she's making off with the bad guys! Weeks later she manages to get an SOS of sorts out and once again Chris and his team are sent in. This time they arrive just in time to rescue Diana. But when she reveals that a terrorist is alive, Chris begins to wonder if her story is on the up and up.

Modern day Monuments Men (and Women) mix with hunts for terrorists, relic trafficking and scorching chemistry between Diana and Chris, which neither are sure if they should trust. There is also a traitor/mole to unearth and that alone had Chris doubting all of his comrades.

Lots of cameos from previous couples from this and other interconnected series but you don't need to have read their books to understand their involvement.

Can't wait for Kira and Rand's story to unfold!
