Guy Montag is a fireman. His job is to destroy the most illegal of commodities, the printed book, along with the houses in which they are hidden. Montag never questions the destruction and ruin his actions produce, returning each day to his bland life and wife, Mildred, who spends all day with her television “family.” But when he meets an eccentric young neighbor, Clarisse, who introduces him to a past where people didn’t live in fear and to a present where one sees the world through the ideas in books instead of the mindless chatter of television, Montag begins to question everything he has ever known.

Not everyone born free and equal, as the Constitution says, but everyone made equal.

We need not to be let alone. We need to be really bothered once in a while. How long is it since you were really bothered?

Mild variations of this hardly seem absurd today.

Wasn’t there an old joke about the wife who talked so much on the telephone that her desperate husband ran out to the nearest store and telephoned her to ask what was for dinner?

We shall this day light such a candle, by God’s grace, in England, as I trust shall never be put out,”’ said Beatty. Stoneman glanced over at the Captain, as did Montag, startled. Beatty rubbed his chin. ‘A man named Latimer said that to a man named Nicholas Ridley, as they were being burnt alive at Oxford, for heresy, on October 16, 1555.’

It’s a bit ironic that I listened to this as an audiobook with my seashells—I mean headphones…

It's a must-listen for those ready to ignite their minds and kindle their passion for the written word.

I feel like this book was very groundbreaking for the time it was written in. The author wrote a dystopian novel to esternate his biggest fear: technology being able to completely switch off our brains and rip off individuality from people. I feel like this brilliantly potraits the fear of being omologated in a society that is going more and more towards indifference.

Fahrenheit 451 raises relevant concerns over the trajectory of our own society. The story establishes itself within a shallow society where books are burned, where a plethora of instant gratifications is provided in order to discourage meaningful thoughts and inquiries. Firemen burn instead of putting out fire, cars aren't allowed to drive too slow, houses aren't allowed to have front porches, children are taken away to kindergarten at a much earlier age,... Every measure is taken so that people cannot have neither the time nor opportunity to think and to converse. All of this is due to the extreme catering to the political demands of minority groups, the notion that opinions offend, and from inquiries stem misery. This has been a thought-provoking and enjoyable read for me, a must-read modern classic. 

A science fiction book that narrates the story of a futuristic society where all books are banished and firefighters are assigned the job of burning the books and the house or building that contains the books rather than putting out fires.

Although the premise of the story was about book-burning, the main ideas of the book are prophetic and presents events that we experience today. The most evident one being censorship and the second being technology. Where the extremely distracting and attention-grabbing parlor walls in the book, is social media and Netflix we have today, and the book-burning censorship is what we see on the internet today

Aside from the themes of the book, there were quotes that I really enjoyed and will treasure.

First was about friendship:

“We cannot tell the precise moment when friendship is formed. As in filling a vessel drop by drop, there is at last a drop which makes it run over; so in a series of kindnesses there is at last one which makes the heart run over.” 

And the second was about living your life:

“Stuff your eyes with wonder, he said, live as if you'd drop dead in ten seconds. See the world. It's more fantastic than any dream made or paid for in factories.”

All in all it was a fun read, and I particularly reading dystopian literature they are stories that are fictional, yet surreal, because we are already living in those stories today, or if not, soon to be.

I'm a certified Ray Bradbury nerd. Even so, this holds up. Reading to teach is different from just reading. This book gives us so much to look at in terms of theme, symbolism, imagery, motif, and story. It's compact, lovely, and powerful.

belki de içinde bulunduğumuz devri anlattığı için beni çok heyecanlandırmadığı gibi yazarın takip etmesi zor ve bayağı anlatımına bir de İthaki'nın fevkalade çevirisi eklenince pek de tesir bırakan bir kitap olamamış ne yazık ki. kitabın büyük bir kısmı çıkarılıp 70-80 sayfada anlatılsa yazarın neye parmak basmaya çalıştığı kesinkes anlaşılabilirdi. kitabın bir film/video olduğu senaryoda 3x hızda izlerdim ve bir şey kaçırmazdım elbet.

This book is a story of a fireman but not the type of you know. This fire departmant only burns books. That’s right books... Therefore, this dystopian novel was my exact hell definition. Books are not allowed; reading, thinking and discussing are not allowed as well.

 It's fine work. Monday burn Millay, Wednesday Whitman, Friday Faulkner, burn 'em to ashes, then burn the ashes. That's our official slogan.'

Our main character is Montag Guy who is the fireman I mentioned above. However, Montag realize that this world is nothing but a hell after he met with Clarisse. He started to questioned ever single thing in his life and can not handle to live like that. And here is the story began...

I loved Clarisse especially. The way she sees the world and herself especially when she said: 
“ Well,' she said, I'm seventeen and I'm crazy. My uncle says the two always go together. When people ask your age, he said, always say seventeen and insane Isn't this a nice time of night to walk? I like to smell things and look at things, and sometimes stay up all night, walking, and watch the sun rise. They walked on again in silence and finally she said, thoughtfully, 'You know, I'm not afraid of you at all.”
It is a heartwarming and twisted story seems like consist of many small stories. But especially it’s a story of people who don’t belong and don’t want to be a part of to the today’s society. After I read this book, I realized that it seems like politics create our today’s world by looking this dystopian novels. We are the society who knows celebrities’ lives more than Einstein’s ideas, Shakespeare’s masterpieces...

Mid, really like the philosophy in the book, but it's too on the nose and just can't get over the writing style. None of the characters are likable and while it has its good moments that I really like it also has a lot of repetitiveness.

I read this as part of my mission to read all the 'banned books' in my library's display. This was the one I started with, and I think it was probably the only one I actually read. Bradbury is an excellent story teller, and I really appreciated the way the characters felt human rather than like book characters.

There are some books that everyone should read at least once regardless of their reading preferences. Fahrenheit 451 is one of those. 


  “The good writers touch life often. The mediocre ones run a quick hand over her. The bad ones rape her and leave her for the flies.”

I’ll keep this review short, because it’s better to experience it for yourself. The writing is beautiful and haunting yet full of bleak portents – some of which have come to pass. It’s tragic how true parts of Bradbury’s portrayal of society is: honestly, there are no lack of mindless sheep who have imaginary intimacies with celebrities. But it’s a poignant portrayal. 


  “ “Don't ask for guarantees. And don't look to be saved in any one thing, person, machine, or library. Do your own bit of saving, and if you drown, at least die knowing you were heading for shore.” 

It’s a short book with a fast paced plot but does not sacrifice the writing. The story is not a firm prediction; rather, it is a thought-provoking exploration of societal motivations and breakdowns. My own interpretation is less about the anti-technology message (though that was clearly an intent of the story) but a focus on societal suffocation of originality and non-conformity. But regardless of your interpretation, it is a stimulating story.

I first read this book in middle school and didn't fully appreciate it at the time (because lets be honest who really appreciates any of our assigned readings for school), but I always remembered enjoying the book and the poetic way in which Ray Bradbury writes. As someone who loves to read the story stuck with me long enough to want to re-visit it as an adult. This is one of my all-time favourite books, and with all the current concerns about censorship and freedom of speech this book is as relevant today as when it was first written. A world where firemen don't put out fires, but rather start them and to think on your own or even a book is dangerous, Ray reminds us that the status quo and the government do not always have our best interests at hard and to continue to question what goes on around us and fight for what we believe in.

It’s interesting to see that the same issues existed over 70 years ago. The parallels to today are striking and thought-provoking. It’s interesting to see how fast the main character goes from conforming to thinking as an individual.
