The Lives of the Ninth-century Popes (Liber Pontificalis) The Ancient Biographies of Ten Popes from A.D. 817-891

Completes the translation of Liber Pontificalis begun in 1989 with The Book of the Pontiffs and continued in 1992 with The Lives of the Eighth-century Popes. The contemporary semi- official papal chronicle provides much information on the history of Italy, especially in regard to such papal concerns as relations with the Carolingian and Byzantine empires, the Saracen invasion of 846, and the building and furnishing of churches.
