Some thoughts:

It is worth mentioning that I read this as a classics undergrad with a particular interest in Persia and the intersections of paganism/Judaism/Christianity in the ancient world. I came to this story from a historical perspective, rather than one of faith. That dichotomy seems to be a determining factor in a lot of the reviews here.

From a historical perspective, I very much enjoyed the exploration into Achaemenid culture; it's a period I don't have a lot of experience with and one that is not commonly fictionalised. Plus, Esther is a cultural outsider, so from her point of view, we the readers see a lot more things given significance than otherwise would be.

The narrative is a bit slow-going at first. I found myself detaching from the content of the story in order to get through the harem scenes without distress. However, once personal connections are established and begin to move through the narrative, Esther's journey (alongside her friends and allies) becomes a lot more engaging.

The emphasis on Mordechai felt forced, but I like the thought that this was intentional, because as a woman in this time and this circumstance - and with the obedient but determined personality that served her so well and indeed enabled her to save her people - Esther had few choices and so making the best of her only 'honourable' life path was in fact a subconscious act of self-preservation. That's my reading of the situation, at least.

This book lingers in my mind. I cannot speak to the accuracy of any of it (especially in terms of themes relating to faith), but I definitely think it's worth reading for the familiarity that comes with fiction - familiarity and visualisation that often cannot be achieved by Biblical or historical study alone. There's something about fiction that settles facts and perspectives into place for me, I imagine that must be true for others as well!
