I read Rebecca’s Soulmark series last year and loved it, so I was very excited about this vampire-centric spin-off series featuring a few familiar faces from Mr. Vrana.

You don’t technically have to read the Soulmark series before this book, but doing so definitely helps fill in some gaps and I think I would have been confused if I hadn’t.

This follows Gwen, a 28 year old terminal cancer patient who gets the rare opportunity to join the Roux sisterhood of vampires—but she must undergo three initiation tests before joining their ranks in the Dark Court.. During one of these tests, she stumbles into William, a shifter/vampire hybrid known for his tenacity in the Court’s fighting pits. He realizes that they share a Soulmark—a birthstone-like marking symbolizing your soul’s tether to another, and the two find their way from there.

I really enjoyed the Court aspect of this book, especially the infighting within the ranks of the Roux sisters. Also loved the deep friendships Gwen forms with (some) of the other initiates and sisters.

I wish that this had been a bit spicier, there seemed to be just a lot of making out and a bit of heavy petting—no full spice until the very end and it’s a pretty brief scene. Other than that, really enjoyed this.
