4.5 rating! At first this book was a little hard to get into but that didn’t last long. This book really threw many many twists and turns at you. The Reds and Silvers live very different lives. While the Silvers like in kingdoms and have special traits, the Reds are living in the dirt. The Reds are either made to have a job or made to go to war. Mare didn’t want her life to be like this but how could it change? After pickpocketing one night, the next morning a knock came to her families door. The knock followed with a job for Mare working for the King & Queen. But how did this happen to her? And what will come next?

This book is the perfect combination of magic and monarchy! Mare is such a bad ass with the coolest powers ever. The love triangle is super sweet. Cal gets me in my feels and if they don’t end up together I will riot the twist at the end of this book still gets me even in the re-read! I can’t wait to finish this series!!!

I loved this first book in the series! I feel that a few concepts were not very original, but I still enjoyed it. I love both Cal and Maven ❤️ Haven’t picked a #Team yet and don’t know if I’ll ever be able to. The relationship dynamics were well thought out and well executed. I also really love the world Aveyard has built. I did find the title to be... weird? I feel that if you are going to name your book The Red Queen, then you should at least HAVE a Red Queen- which is not the case... However- I still enjoyed it. Can’t wait to dive into the next one! Content: Fantasy/Dystopian with a touch of Romance. Think Hunger Games/Divergent/Red Rising Language: Some Violence: Medium Religious: No

A little slow at the start, and I'm not a super big fan of Mare so far. However, overall I enjoyed the book. The ending is not the twist I expected, so I'm now eager to see what happens next. Loved the world building, and loved the magic system. A good book all in all! I would recommend it.

3.5 stars...This was cute. It took a while to get into it at first...maybe because it felt like other YA novels I've read. Even though the story was original it still had similarities to let's say Red Rising; for example the hierarchy of people (reds and silvers). There was a twist that I wasn't expecting between Cal and Maven, I knew something was odd and not to trust either character, but I wasn't ready for the level of deceit!!!! All I can say is what a RAT BASTARD he (I'm not gonna say who) turned out to be!!!! Oh and I for sure thought that Mare would become a queen, seeing as the title of the book is Red Queen...just saying. The whole nickname given to her wasn't even introduced officially until more than halfway through the book, but it's not an official title, just what a few reds (like 2 people) from the scarlet guard call her.

My god this was hard to get through. To be fair, I would give the plot 7/10 and the creative premise and interesting world building a 7.5/10, but the writing! Was. So. Bad. Here are the major things that bugged me: -So much telling rather than showing, or often doing both. Have faith in the intelligence of your reader!! If you say your MC is crying, WE GET IT THAT SHE IS ALSO SAD, YOU DON'T HAVE TO TELL US A MILLION TIMES. -A roller coaster of emotions. I can put up with lots of emotions, hey I read YA after all, I get it lol but JESUS Mare needs to get her shit together. One minute she is in love with a character and then in the next paragraph she's all I HATE YOU WITH THE FIRE OF A THOUSAND SUNS. I literally cannot keep up, I have severe emotional whiplash right now. Also, just a thought, less is more!! It is okay to be subtle and to build tension and development of characters over time! Sheesh. -ALLLLL the characters are in love with the MC. I mean. Come. On. I think I could make the case that every single character in this book is either in love with, or jealous of Mare. Seriously. *eeyyyeee roollllll* -YA tropes left and right. If the above doesn't convince you let me add a bit more on that here. Premise: A girl from a very poor "sector" ahem, part of the country, sacrifices herself to save her "sister" ahem, sister and rest of her family, and leaves the boy she grew up with and loves dearly behind to go behind enemy lines, all the while fueling a rebellion with "Gale", sorry, said childhood friend. lol Remind you Hunger Games much?? I get that a lot of YA has a similar formula. Hell, Ever the Hunted by Erin Summerill had almost the exact same premise, but you know what? I LOVED THAT BOOK! Somehow the writing in that book made me forget I was reading something tropey, because the writing was beautiful and the characters were well thought out and the writer didn't treat the reader like a child. So moral of the story, you could have a cool premise with all the powers and plot twists but if your characters don't make sense and do silly things then I just can't, sorry not sorry lol Rant over :P

ok, now i love this book, like legit. definitely my favourite book in the red queen series. not gonna lie, it started out kinda slow-paced when it was about mare's life in the stilts and the battle at the arena but i pushed through those parts and i'm really glad i did. ever since mare saw cal, i knew that that was the start of a series of fortunate and unfortunate events lol. i low-key simped for cal when mare described him but i dont anymore ever since king's cage lol. anyways, i just love this book. from how mare got a job at the white palace thing and then she had to become maven's betrothed or whatever and then mare and cal's journey back home and then maven and mare being in scarlet guard and then maven knowing mare was in love with cal and he didn't have a chance but he loved her and ugh i felt so bad and then when maven brought mare to cal's room so mare can go back to see her parents, even though maven didn't go, he lingered at the door with sad eyes watching mare and cal be in love dkjfkjadlsk i cant bye the boy doesn't deserve this. and then i remember getting to the part where stuff started to unfold up in the tower thing and i was ready to risk everything including going to school late just to stay in the car to finish reading lol. not gonna lie, i was kinda sad because the fake (or perhaps partly real) maven was so freaking nice but then i wasn't suprised you know because he was just too perfect. bUt sTiLL. i low-key disliked maven after stuff happened and hated elara lol. like maven was actually enjoying the scene at the arena (or perhaps he pretended to) like dsjdsalkdjsalhdkj. and then i was so relieved that mare and cal were saved by the guard lol. wait i forgot, the time when julian and mare went down to the cells to rescue kilorn farley and 2 other people or smth, damn that was smooth. and at the end when they were like: no distractions. no distractions. like um, sUrE. ~ n o d i s t r a c t i o n s ~ (wait was that in red queen or glass sword lol idk lol bye) #stanjulian #stanmaven #stanlucas

The start of the book is a lot of fun. I was really invested in the story. But nearing the end I started to enjoy it a lot less. I think the plot twist was very good but also quite far-fetched. And of course, they have to escape in the end..... It feels like the book was based on a standard script and in the end they thought, we need a twist! I'm not sure if I will read the other books in the series.

** spoiler alert ** This is one of my comfort books - this whole series is. I first read this book when I was in seventh grade. I am now a senior in high school and I still love it. The world building is great and interesting- definitely unique. Mare is a good main character I think, good for YA. The plot twist is AMAZING. I love Maven with my whole heart. I have always loved him. I loved when authors have such beautifully written characters that it leaves you wondering what if? Like who would Maven have been without Elara’s influence. What if she didn’t corrupt him? I truly believe that in another life, in one which Maven was not twisted by Elara, Mare and Maven would be soulmates. The plot twist in this book breaks my heart every time I read it.

"The truth doesn't matter. It only matters what the people believe." I loved the setting in this wonderful world. The first few chapters were promising. But the plot line was to predictable and I didn't feel any connection with the characters, so I wasn't even shocked at the big plottwist. I can understand why this book is so popular. It has its qualities, but it doesn't seem to be able to influence my feelings, which I do look for in a book. I want to feel something, and I didn't.

*3.5 stars* I have very mixed feelings about this book... Before I went into it I knew that it was a bit over-hyped and that's why I had very low expectations. That was probably why I enjoyed Red Queen as much as I did. I think that, overall, it is a very pleasant read, fast paced, action packed, I liked the whole "anyone can betray anyone" thing and, admittedly, it gets better towards the end. However, I have to say that Red Queen is, in a way, reminiscent of many Young Adult dystopian or fantasy stories and I found myself thinking "Oh yeah, I've seen that before", many times. Apart from that, a lot of things that happen in this book are so predictable, or at least for me. I even saw the "big" plot-twist coming miles away! So, I would've totally given Red Queen a solid 5/5 stars if the story felt more original or if there were some actual plot-twists. But in the end, I did enjoy it and I will definitely give the sequel a go!
