good book. very creepy. very intense. Mackie and Tate are a sandwich full of awesome sauce.
even though the F-word is never used, anyone who knows anything about faeries can tell this is a faery story. creepy faery, not sparkly and butterfly wing fairy.
Emma has got to be about the coolest sister EVER.

The cover art, the sharp objects dangling over a black pram, is what convinced me to add The Replacement by Brenna Yovanoff to my wishlist. I first saw it when I was helping someone remember the title of the book an all she had was the cover art. Its design reminded me of Bunny Modern by David Bowman. The books are very different but I'm glad that tenuous thread made me pick up The Replacement.

Mackie Doyle lives in Gentry with his family and attends high school. He just wants to be a normal teen but even the mundane, like a blood drive at the school, serves as a reminder that he's not normal. He's probably a changling. At first I thought Mackie was being a typical angsty teenager. I took being a changling as his personal metaphor for feeling out of place due to the usual adolescent hormones.

I was wrong. Gentry, it turns out, has a long history with changlings. There was a time when they had to pay a blood tithe but now they have settled into a grim acceptance of the occasional child going missing.

Mackie, though, is unusual, even for a changling. As he discovers why he's unique he unravels the terrible history of Gentry. Here, I am reminded of the closing chapters of The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman.

I made it a quarter of the way through this book, and all of the characters made me want to scrape my face off to avoid reading more of this book. I’m usually not one to enjoy high school drama. That being said, I do always enjoy a creepy horror story. Going into this book, I did enjoy the vibe that I think they were trying to build for the world. It kind of seemed like fright night combined with the characters of Life is Strange. Everyone was a stereotype, which drove me crazy, and I couldn’t care about the main character because he seem to only exist to wallow in his own sadness. I can’t recommend this book to others because I simply did not enjoy anything. Tate was somewhat bearable for the part that I read, but knowing how the other characters seem to have only one personality trait, I think that might have worn off after a bit.

I must also say that I hate reading books where the entire purpose of the main character is to feel sorry for them even though they are perfectly capable of being better than they are. Mackie did nothing to earn my sympathy. He was just a jerk to everyone and sick all the time. A redeeming quality? I could not find one. If you want me to like your book, your character has to be three-dimensional and not a walking sob story that does nothing to make me care about them.

So, friends, I can’t recommend this book to you. It was not my cup of tea.

Personally the writing felt only okay. It wasn’t anything spectacular. But it wasn’t horrible either. It felt to me as if the only character that developed was Mackie. The other characters felt like they were just kind of there. 

The story started out strong. It was creepy and mysterious, but nothing really happened till I was past half way in the book. I was also quite confused at times. There were gaps where the author would jump from one time and place to another on the same page. And I had to try and figure out what was happening all over again. 

Although the plot was only alright for me, I absolutely loved the world building. The author went into details of the history of the town, Gentry and explained what everybody felt towards what was happening in the town. I thought the world and ideas in this book were great and original. I don’t think I’ve heard of anything like this before. 

Overall the book was okay. I loved some parts, but other parts were just meh.

One of the best books I have ever read....

The replacement is "One of the best books I have ever read." still I have a hate/Love relation with it. You can never love it completely or hate it to the edge as it was almost perfect (for others it can be perfect but not me).

Mackie is not a human; he once was but now he is one of them living among us. The people of the underworld who must sacrifice a living child to keep them powerful.

Mackie is one of the teen characters that you will like but the one to love is his sister who event if she knew he is not her biological brother but still she kept him safe and alive.

You also have to repeat the dark creatures because not all of them need to kill or hate; some of them need to feel loved to live. Not all what is dark is bad.

I must pause now or I shall spoil the book. I am sure you shall enjoy reading it.
