Unhappy Philippa is tied to the house caring for the handicapped Owen, and Charlotte will not leave Philippa to cope on her own, despite her engagement to John. Thirteen year-old Lowrie tries to make sense of a world where the Bible commands "thou shalt not kill" but it's morally OK to put a dying rabbit out of its misery.
