The Dialect of Hartland, Devonshire (Classic Reprint)

Excerpt from The Dialect of Hartland, Devonshire The Introduction to the following Glossary is a reprint, with slight additions and corrections, of a paper read before the Devonshire Association for the Advancement of Science, Literature, and Art, at Tiverton, in July, 1891, and printed in their Transactions (xxiii., pp. 420 The Glossary itself has not before been published. It was prepared as a Supplement to Mr. Elworthy's West Somerset word-book, but, during its progress through the press, it occurred to me that it would be advisable to make thelist of local words complete in itself. I therefore set to work to extract from the West Somerset word-book all the dialect words which are also in use at Hartland. As it was unfortunately too late to incorporate these words in the Glossary, I have been obliged to give them in a separate list. These two lists together form a fairly complete Glossary of the Hartland dialect, but. As it has been made almost entirely from memory, I cannot hope that it is exhaustive.
