Carrie, Carrie whose politics are to the right of Genghis Khan. Who believes that if the good Lord wanted us to live together he'd have made us all one color. Who believes a woman is only as good as the man she's with. And I love her. Even when I hated her, I loved her. Maybe all kids love their mothers, and she's the only mother I've ever known. Or maybe underneath her crabshell of prejudice and fear there's a human being that's loving. I don't know but either way I love her.

this novel is just song—so rhythm, so liquid, so heart. a careful blend of humour and honesty, Brown does the big-fish-leaves-the-small-pond story with so much grace, with all the nuance that writing a story about an ambitious queer woman of colour requires. picked this up in a secondhand bookstore in brixton, and couldn't stop reading once I started. so delicious to fall in love with a character and her characters so wholly 

One of the most authentic WLW books I've read. Talks about queer stereotypes and gender roles. I like how the author writes in a way that encapsulates the level of intelligence and education progression of the main character throughout the book.

Definitely a strange book but hilarious and insightful to what growing up in poverty and as a queer woman in the mid 1900s was like. I also like how it talked baout sex positivity which was very rare and not accepted by the majority of society at that time. 

Although this book was short, it was just hard for me to get through certain parts.
