Flashes of brilliance, particularly towards the end, unfortunately let down by the rest. Only the non-human narration is allowed to be unexplained, the people are always laying out everything to themselves and to us but only differing clichéd tropes separate them from each other. I was sad about this book; the concept is good but the narration made it impossible to indulge in. (Also, it's an annoying form of magical realism to have people remarking insistently all the time about how totally ordinary and unremarkable the magic)
