i really loved this “Serafina and the Black Cloak“ as a kid, it was like my first book.

This book was just really disappointing for me. Having been to the Biltmore house once since I live in the same state, I was interested in reading it. But the characters were just... thin. They made irrational decisions and it made me put this book down about a quarter of the way through it. The main character is either the most unintelligent 11 year old or simply the worst kind of person since she WITNESSES A MURDER and says nothing to anyone in the house upon fear of eviction from her home in the boiler room. She also happens to be some manner of supernatural creature herself, I'm guessing some kind of cat with the whole four-toed, rat catching thing. I'm really not that interested in finding out. This isn't a series I'll be finishing.

I wish this book had done more to make me feel like she was actually in the Biltmore house. It failed to capture the grandeur in the chunk that I read.

The story was a good story. I liked Serafina as a main character. I loved the setting, but I think that's because I've been to the Biltmore estate myself. It took me back to when I used to visit.

A large portion of the story becomes repetitive, a lot of running and chasing and fighting. But the characters were interesting enough that I am planning on continuing the series at sometime.
