I discovered after I started reading this book that I have actually read it before. (Somehow a different copy of the book got marked read while this copy stayed on the to-read list.)
This familiarity with the book, thankfully, did not detract from my opinion. 
In no particular order, the following are some of the things I took away. 
This book is very clearly "pro-animal" but not in obnoxious way. Also, once the rats got involved the story seemed to split and behave line two stories mashed together. Everything didn't always make sense. It's a sweet story that's definitely well-written. 
I recommend this book to all those parents looking to find good literature for their children to read and to those who enjoy good literature themselves no matter the reading level.
