<br />Solomon Kane is one of Howard's best drawn characters - a dour haunted seventeenth century Puritan whose occult adventures in Africa and Europe resulted in some fine short examples of pulp horror. This one was published in Weird Tales in 1929.<br /><br />The story is pure Gothic with some splatter added - an inn with no guests, bandits, skeletons, bloody vengeance, betrayal and thrills with Kane's distrust of Frenchmen and Germans amply demonstrated. Skulls definitely get cleft and, of course, there is a vengeful ghost.
