Seventeen-year-old Mackenzie Spencer and her father, Brigadier General Paul Spencer, have very different ideas about her future. While Mackenzie harbors aspirations of becoming a professional musician, her father insists she go to law school. He quashes Mackenzie's every attempt to follow her dreams and openly hates Mackenzie's boyfriend, Derek Harper. When her father punishes her for something she didn't do, Mackenzie decides she has had enough. She wants out of the Spencer family and out of Walnut Creek, Virginia. She and Derek decide to go wherever their hearts take them. After a traumatic event, Mackenzie finds herself in Long Island, New York. There, her paternal grandmother lives at the quirky retirement community of Windswept. Mackenzie grew up believing her grandmother was like her rigid son, but as she grows closer to Eleanor Spencer, she finds a kindred spirit. The two women, one with a bright future and the other with a colored past, will find comfort in each other. In getting to know her grandmother and the other Windswept residents, Mackenzie will realize the true bonds of family, friendship, and community. Eleanor's gentle encouragement may be just what she needs to listen to her heart once again and see where it will lead.
