there are a lot of insightful nuggets in this book, but it didn’t age well and I ended up choosing not to finish it because I couldn’t get past the blatant homophobia and transphobia in the book. it would be great if the author could do a new edition or something with these parts taken out. there are several examples of “toxic” men wherein the sole reason given for their “toxicity” is the fact that they are bisexual, or otherwise questioning their gender or sexuality. multiple times throughout the book it is asserted that if a man experiences sexual or romantic attraction towards other men in any way that that precludes them from being able to engage in a healthy relationship with a woman. this is so, so wrong - not only is it grossly homophobic but it is also the opposite of what most women who have dated bisexual men experience: bisexual/gender non conforming men tend to be light years ahead of their cishet counterparts in terms of respecting women and understanding our struggles. we are not going to get closer to eradicating toxic masculinity by reinforcing heterosexual and gender norms. sorry, not for me.
