Apparently I read this book back in 2009. It must have been one of the books that I read quickly or barely read since when I picked up this book, I had no recollection of any of the events contained within. 
This book built slowly until about three-quarters of the way through when events took off running at breakneck speed. I could barely put the book down when I reached that point. It careened towards the end with that enormous speed, coming to a rather unsatisfying conclusion, a conclusion that likely will be reached in the next book in the series. No wonder so many of our students wanted to read the next book as soon as they finished this book. I know that when my students read this coming up in their book club, they will be begging for the sequel.

I possibly need some more time to process this book but my initial thoughts are that, while I very much liked it, Roll of Thunder would have probably had more of an impact on me reading as a child. Some books transcend their intended audience but with the subject matter, it's hard for this book to do that. Still definitely one I'll be putting on my childrens' bookshelf and one I'm intrigued to study.
