Love is like getting lost in the woods. Shouting aloud that you're safe might make you feel better, but it doesn't mean you’re not lost.

Why can't a woman have a deep affinity with a man, though? Perhaps even love him, and he can love her, but it doesn't have to become romantic. Then it's okay if you love the person. You don't have to pretend you don't, or hide any subterfuge about being more than friends. Why not? Isn't there something missing if two people can't love each other safely that way? Like the way it's possible to love Paris without owning it, or the way we love music. Appreciative love. We need to find people like that, who cultivate what's good in us, and who can help draw out our poison. Otherwise, it's almost like if you don't want to fall in love, then you're on your own

Beautifully mundane with heartbreak at every corner, this book's prose tackles the ever-present sadness one can have in life, and sneaks up on the reader with vivid descriptions of the human condition that invite tears to journey across reddened cheeks. I cannot compliment this novel enough: a must-read for those who feel the need to tackle their own melancholy.
