Efectos secundarios (Side effects) is a novel about literature, writers and the nature of modern life -- Virginia Woolf meets Juan Rolfo. The protaganist, a famous Mexian writer, finds herself in the midst of a drug-war torn city. Violence is everywhere, not only violence to people and especially women, but also to books, which disappear and are strewn around the city. Efectos secundarios makes us think about everything that dies in this world -- the collatoral damage of violence, the illusion of order, the need for a value for "beauty" against the dictates of the sales-figure count or bodies as hard data versus life and literature.
