Amazing how Thaddeus Lane manages to be the hero of his second book here, even at 80 years old! He was easily the best character. This was a well written, enthralling story about my favorite time period. My primary complaint is that if we are going to have an alluringly beautiful woman trope, I'd like to have the hero be a man of character who can control himself enough to keep his hands off of her. But by allowing Marietta's beauty to turn his head, in my opinion Slade wasn't any better than the rest of them, and that was disappointing. I was given little insight into what made the couple a good long term match or how they bettered each other.
