as the first of six published novels, volume one does what it must: it creates an ever-expanding world that revolves primarily around the sour relationship between xie qingcheng and he yu—a relationship that makes it hard to believe there’s a possibility for friendship, much less romance. it’s weaker, i think, then the later plot, but it’s also harder to properly form an opinion on a story that is technically unfinished. regardless, it draws you in with its endlessly unraveling mystery that makes you wonder just how everyone is connected.
