Very good 1st book of a series. I heard there are some warnings in there. 

A tyran kills himself and is found reincarnated in is 15 y old self with all his memory intact, in the Sisheng peak sect. 

The characters are well developed, they are not particularly friendly or nice, but show complexity, and many various emotions and doubt. The world building of cultivation is here, right from the start and the magic is gorgeous. I like xianxia in series and books to be honest, but this is my first exploration of Danmei, and I will surely carry on this series for now (as soon as I get the second book).

Before you think about reading erha, do NOT read this without looking over the warnings. They are absolutely necessary to read before diving into this; do not head in blind. If you want a review from somebody who isn't a proshipper, here is a review:

Erha surrounds our main character, Mo Ran, who after committing suicide in his previous life is reincarnated into his own body from when he was 16 years old. His goal with this new opportunity is to save the person who he was in love with but who had died in his last life, Shi Mei. According to Mo Ran, the two's shizun, Chu Wanning let Shi Mei die in his previous life, and because of that, he resents him completely, even having destroyed and annihilated his last world because of it. So, you follow Mo Ran as he makes new decisions and discovers new things.

The main pairing is actually between Mo Ran and Chu Wanning.

Normally, I would find this kind of dynamic strange, weird, and it would probably make me uncomfortable (like svsss). A teacher and his student. However, having read it, I found that Mo Ran never truly saw Chu Wanning as someone he looked up to. When he had first met him, he respected him, but quickly after, this changes after a couple of events, and from then on, Mo Ran feared and then hated him. And when he finally begins to turn back around, Mo Ran struggles to respect him as a shizun because of his developing romantic feelings.

The twists and turns in this novel are actually so fun. I really enjoyed reading this. The characters are all good in their own ways and never stray. Aside from the unnecessary detailed rape scenes, this novel was a great read. The three star review is because I can't do a 3-1/2 which I lowered the rating because 1. I read an unofficial translation and 2. the unnecessary rape scenes.

I plan on rereading this to take out those scenes so that my friends can comfortably read erha, so once I've done that, I'll edit this review because there is a part in the novel where you can stop reading, have a happy ending, and not run into any of these types of scenes.

There is ONE thing where my opinion on Mo Ran differs from a lot of people: Mo Ran and Taxian-jun are two different characters.

SPOILER WARNING AHEAD!!!

Taxian-jun was Mo Ran's name in his previous life after he demolished the world and ruled over the few existing lives. This version of Mo Ran, you learn, was put under a spell. This spell compleltely morphed and changed him as a person, leading him further and further away from being Mo Ran and into this Taxian-jun. By the end of the novel, they are two distinct people in one body. Mo Ran has split personality disorder, sharing his body with the soul from his previous life. Many people disagree with this and believe that they are the same character, but I think that's being ignorant of the mental illness that Mo Ran clearly has by the end of the novel and being disrespectful to the character that Mo Ran became throughout. Taxian-jun aggressively "loves" Chu Wanning (I personally see no love. He's violent and he is his rapist). Meanwhile, Mo Ran deeply has true genuine feelings for him and would never hurt him. They are different.

I am a Mo Ran apologist! But I will never like Taxian-jun's character. Yes, he was put under a spell that created him the way that he is, but he's fictional, and it's truly not that serious. If someone feels uncomfortable with a character for something such as being a rapist, people should not even argue.

i mean it's not bad, and the plot is interesting- but why oh why this genre is so full of dubcon/noncon. whyyyyy.

I gobbled this one down in a week. If you like MXTX's work I think you will like this cultivation novel. The first few chapters are hilarious. In fact, a good deal of the book is hilarious. The author loves their bad puns, so, naturally, I approve.

Some people have criticized this novel as dark, and on reflection - yes, it is. Mo Ran is not a what I'd call a mentally stable main character. He did some pretty awful things in his past life not excluding SA though they do not go into gratuitous detail. Yet, I find myself actively hoping that he will redeem himself and not be such a scum this time around. What I like about George R.R. Martin's books is that he knows how to write a hateable character that you want to see reform themselves - though it's a totally different genre than this, and a different author , the same complexity and nuance applies.

 Chu Wanning is easily the most mysterious character to me and I dare say, my favorite. What made him the angry and distant Shizun that he is? And he's clearly not just a rotten man, despite Mo Ran's first impression. 

The ghosts and spirits in this book are terrifying. 100% would read on Halloween or during a storm for maximum fear.
