Finding Zach

Finding Zach

For five years, Zach Tyler, son of one of the world's richest software moguls, was held hostage, tortured, and abused. When he is rescued at last from the Venezuelan jungle, he is physically and psychologically shattered, but he slowly begins to rebuild the life he should have had before an innocent kiss sent him into hell. His childhood best friend David has lived those years with overwhelming guilt and grief. Every relationship David has tried has fallen apart because of his feelings for a boy he thought dead. When Zach is rescued, David is overjoyed--and then crushed when Zach shuts him out. Two years later, David returns home, and he and Zach must come to terms with the rift between them, what they feel for each other, and what their future could hold. But Zach has secrets, and one of them might well destroy their fragile love.

So I think I might’ve expected too much from this book and ended up disappointing myself a bit which is something I should learn not to do 😂 I mostly enjoyed it tho, it was emotional and dealt serious topics but still had happy moments. I often enjoy heavier topics in books and seeing how authors have their characters deal and process their trauma, especially when it’s done in a realistic and healthy way. There were some things I didn’t like in this book but I think they were more to do with personal preference rather than actual issues with the book. I felt like some things could’ve been dealt with more sensitively in relation to Zach’s trauma, but I think I might just comparing it too much to other books I’ve read that have had characters dealing with SA trauma so that’s more of a me problem. I also didn’t like the way some characters talked, like how sometimes when Zach and David were talking emotional and said they “sounded like a girl”, or when Mike and Zach’s friends said he didn’t care about Zach being gay once he didn’t try make a move on him. But then I realised this was published ten years ago and those choice of words were probably a lot more common then, even if it was still really unnecessary to add. One thing I will say tho is that I’m really glad the author didn’t brush Zach’s trauma under the carpet after a while and made him forget about it. I really dislike when authors do that as if finding love is a magical cure all. I think David did the right thing by saying he wouldn’t join Zach for his first year away for college so that they could both learn to be okay on their own, I’m just glad we didn’t had to suffer through it with them 😂
