Um, okay, so if you're a history major this book will infuriate you. In fact, if you appreciate history, or travel, this book will infuriate you. Not to mention the insta-love.
A girl, Becca, is "dragged" on a family trip around Europe. What wouldn't I give to go on a family trip to Europe? She meets Crown Prince Nikolai and they fall in love. The end.

Becca is eighteen but she sure as hell doesn't act like it. She acts like a petulant 14-year-old. I dislike labelling female characters as whiny but Becca was, well ... whiny. So many gripes about having to be dragged along with her parents, gripes about European history ... she outright grated on me. Not to mention her and Dylan's blatant disrespect for their parents. Dylan was annoying too. Nikolai didn't annoy me so much but he's very one dimensional as all the characters in this are.

And the insta-love. They meet, they spend about a week together and then mope so hard whenever they're apart. I can buy this from younger characters but not from eighteen year olds. Nope. It was so frustrating to read.

Take one part Chasing Liberty and one part The Prince and Me and you have Royally Lost, which is perfect because both of those movies are high on my "guilty pleasure" favorites list. I thought Royally Lost was a blast! It was fun and uncomplicated, which was exactly what I expected when I picked it up. 

Becca is forced on a European vacation with her brother, father and step-mother. Personally, I would *kill* to go on a European vacation... but I get where Becca was coming from. Her dad is distant, her step-mom tries WAY too hard and her brother is more interested in girls than anything else. Though, I will say, I kinda loved her brother. He didn't pull any punches and he helped cover for Becca when she needed him. When Becca meets Nikolai, she thinks he's just a regular guy on vacation, too. Little does she know he's a prince on the run. 
Together, Becca and Nikolai explore Europe on a day-to-day basis and really get to know each other. They have some great days in some of the best spots in Europe. Since they weren't traveling together, there was always that small bit of apprehension of how Nikolai would find her the next day – IF Nikolai would find her the next day. Then of course, she finds out his true identity and that he's on the run... paparazzi gets involved and his father's men start showing up and things begin to get more complicated.

I loved the part that fate played in the book. Becca and Nikolai had seen each other a couple times before being placed in each other's way and meeting officially. I thought they had great chemistry from the start. Ok, so there was a smidgen of what might be considered instalove in this book, but I was more than ok with it. They were on vacation. Everything happens at warp speed on vacation. You're not living real person time. 

I really liked the characters and the story. Becca was a sweet, regular girl. Nikolai was everything I would imagine a runaway prince would be, without ever being a conceited jerk. They had great banter and I found them charming together. I think there's a good focus on family from both Becca and Nikolai's perspectives by the end of the book. They have similar struggles with their respective families and I thought everything was nicely resolved. Both of these characters were trying to find themselves and along the way they did that... and found each other in the process. 

I found Royally Lost to be a great, fun and flirty young adult romance set against a fantastic European background. Angie took the time to add in quite a bit of history and facts, which I appreciated. It's obvious she did her research and that showed in the world she built for Becca, Nikolai and the rest of the characters. This is a great summer read for anyone who enjoys road trip reads.

I had to put this book on my DNF list. Which isn’t to say it is a bad book! It’s just not something I was able to connect with and about halfway through, I realized I likely never would. 

The issues I had with the novel itself are pretty simple and straight forward: I didn’t like or appreciate the main character. Again, this is just my personal preference and what doesn’t work for me might work out for you. 

I do think that a lot of romantic comedy lovers will appreciate this novel for what it is and find warmth in it. Fans of the genre will likely be able to embrace this story and its tropes far more than I could. 

On a lighter note, I thought the author had STYLE when writing. The only reason I couldn’t connect with it was entirely my disconnect with characters in it. It was, as well, the only thing that convinced me to get to that 50% mark.
