Wurlitzer and his wife end up in southeast Asia, almost immediately after the death of their 21-year-old son.

On the trip, Wurlitzer comes to understand Dharma concepts at an emotional and spiritual level, rather than purely intellectually.

He uses lots of quotes to support his transformation, but nothing is used in a self-consciously academic way. He's not trying to prove anything to anyone -- instead he seems to finally understand what it all means.
