Old companions reunited in the dungeon...Will ex-comrads be able to work together in the rescue of Falin from the Lunatic Magician? Will a shared meal manage to right past wrongs?

Delicious in Dungeon

while relatively short for a series with this much popularity, dungeon meshi makes up for it with its cozy, feel-good vibe. even in its heaviest moments, the series retains its comedic edge and the characters never fully turn cruel -- i can't remember the last time i laughed so hard over a manga panel.

dungeon meshi's biggest appeal is that of a found family - odd members of a ragtag team who come together, explore ruins, and eat hearty, home-cooked food at the end of each day. what's not to love?

I wanted more, a longer epilogue at least, but I respect Ryoko Kui's dedication to completing the story the way she wanted.

Haven't felt so so passionate about a manga in a while. I love the comedy and the dark elements of the story. It's so goofy yet surprisingly dark (imo). Plus, I love Kabru <3

With the possibility of starvation as a constant companion, Laios's party continues advancing deeper into the dungeon. The adventurers have made it to the third floor, but only rotting zombies, ghastly spirits, living paintings, and golems await them--all of which are absolutely inedible. The party has come this far by adapting and learning how to live off the dubious bounties of the dungeon. But how will they manage when even the meanest monster won't make a decent meal?

To drive this fact home brutally fast, the book begins with a questing party buying supplies for their foray into the dungeon. They are putting their packing emphasis on food because they don't want to have to go back up to the surface and they are afraid of going hungry.

The very next scene is our main characters examining their bodies. They had been killed by bugs that pretend to be loot. The same bugs end up being a tasty source of protein when cooked right

New dangers and new recipes await the party in the third installment of the utterly unique and endearing Delicious in Dungeon!

Delicious in Dungeon, Volume 3 by Ryoko Kui continues with the struggle to cross the water level. Characters who died in the volume 2 are revived long enough to show new ways of dying in the dungeon. Interestingly they are briefly ahead of the protagonists, suggesting that time and space might be more variable in the dungeon that anyone knows.

But mostly, volume 3 is about our group doggedly making their across this endless floor of water. There are sirens and kelpie to ignore. But their full time dungeon resident notices something off with the floor. There are too few mid-range creatures suggesting that the environment has fallen out of balance.

IT'S EAT OR BE EATEN...LITERALLY! The adventurously eating adventurers have finally reached the abandoned orc village where the red dragon was last spotted--and, from the chard and crumbling evidence, where it is still active and on the prowl! No matter the risks, Laios is determined to recover what's left of Falin and resurrect her, but taking down the massive red dragon will be no easy task, even on a full stomach! Someone's going to wind up on the menu, but will it be red dragon steak or flame-grilled adventurer?!

Delicious in Dungeon, Volume 4 by Ryoko Kui brings to a conclusion the initial search for Laios's sister. At the beginning of the series she was eaten by a dragon. Resurrection magic is common in the dungeon — that's been established over the previous volumes. But her revival is an extreme one and one that leaves the other party members wondering if it was the right decision and if she's still the same person.

It's eat or be eaten...literally! Massive changes in the dungeon have drawn out new monsters for Laios and his party to take on-and taste! But the shift has attracted the attention of the western elves, whose intervention could spell further trouble not only for Laios, but also for everyone on the island! Facing the threat of the Lunatic Magician from within and the elves from without, the adventurers must rally as a team like never before, especially when forced to confront a beast straight out of Senshi's nightmares!

Senshi's story

At the start of the series Senshi's appearance and vast knowledge of what can be eaten and how to prepare it so it tastes good is welcomed without question. Now, though, as the party has learned more about the history and workings of the dungeon, they've begun to question how he came to know what to eat. Reluctantly Senshi explains.

Much of this volume is told in flashback while in the present a meal is prepared. Senshi explains how he was the last survivor of a group of miners who accidentally found themselves in the dungeon and were subsequently trapped. Senshi's cooking skills have grown out of necessity as food ran out.

The opening scene is of a member of an adventure party being eaten by a dragon. The remainder of the book is them trying to level up and chase down the dragon to get their companion back — or get revenge.

But here's the thing. They also have no money for supplies. They have no money for food. So they decide to cook and eat the things that they kill or harvest in the dungeon. Imagine, if you will, a dungeon filled with monsters that are equivalents to Japanese food ingredients.

Something has gone terribly wrong! Laios and party have all woken up in the wrong shape!? Their races have switched-Laios is now a dwarf, Marcielle a half-foot, and Senshi's...an elf!? Is it even possible they continue their trek through the dungeon in these unfamiliar forms?

Delicious in Dungeon, Vol. 8

The first half opens with the humorous and embarrassing effects of eating or being too near changelings. They happen to look, act, and taste like mushrooms but they will make the affected into a different species for a while. The traveling companions get an uninvited opportunity to experience the particular strengths and weaknesses each species brings to the party.

But the rest of the book is right at the surface — the first room of the dungeon. Visitors are getting cocky. The dungeon appears to be an endless source of easy wealth. The battle that happens here is the first taste of how bad things are going to get.

Such a fun little read, perfect way to get your cozy fantasy in small doses. My first time reading a manga and this book made it easy, will most likely continue the series. The only reason it has 4 stars rather than 5 is I just never got that feeling of getting sucked in, it was more of just a fun read.

"It's eat or be eaten...literally! Laios nears the bottom of the dungeon and his inevitable confrontation with Sissel, the lunatic lord of its labyrinthine halls. In a succubus-induced slumber, Laios comes face-to-face with the winged lion, the source of Sissel's power. Laios knows only that the lion is held captive by Sissel in the dungeon's depths, but it could be the Canaries know a great deal more... With their centuries of experience, the elves' knowledge could shed some light on the truth of the dungeon and its master--or prove to be Laios's undoing...!"--Provided by publisher.
