Grove presented a fascinating topic. However, as many other reviewers have noted, the lack of emotions makes it extremely difficult for the reader to connect with the characters. I also overanalyzed so many of the different actions by characters in the story because so many of the actions stem from emotions yet Grove kept hammering home the fact that these people, except Cal, did not have emotions.
Ultimately, it just fell flat.
