The funny thing about childhood is how unimportant so many "big" things turn out to be. Where I grew up, the city or state. How I grew up-rich or poor, with siblings or without, married parents or divorced. What I had-a lot of toys or none, nice clothes or hand-me-downs, a big circle of friends or just one. None of that mattered, not a single bit. What was important, what I remember so clearly, is that when I came home, someone was there waiting for me, always. Someone was happy to see me, always. Because we had a dog. This is why people love them. They're always happy to see you, always excited when you walk in the door. In fact, their whole world revolves around you. Dogs are pack animals by nature, and their owner is their pack. You are the sun they orbit.
