Alien books are always pretty interesting. I don’t know why I find them interesting, but they are so I’m always a little cautious going into them because some of these types of books can get weird really fast. And not the good weird, the bad weird. The kind of weird that makes me re-sale the book at Half Price Books. So, yah. 

Anyways, I really liked this book’s concept. It was a mixture of creepy weird and good weird with a dash of romance, so of course I got into this book pretty fast. This book kind of revolves around aliens eating humans but in a more toned down way.

- if there is a toned down way to eat humans…? Food for thought. - 

So these aliens eat humans emotions. Kind of scary… but the emotions have to be turned into liquid first before they can eat/drink it. So these scientists make these organs that do this process (emotions > liquid) for the aliens inside a human’s body. And only some humans are able to accept this organ into their body and usually do so for the mula that comes with the organ. 

Victoria becomes an EVE so that her family can afford her sister’s medical bills and live in a cleaner and safer home. Which is a pretty big sacrifice. I mean, how many people do you know would be okay with putting a foreign organ into their body so that aliens can eat?…. I know it would have to be a lot of money before I would consider becoming lunch for some reptilian alien.

Victoria isn’t the usual female lead. She is sharp, and anti-social. I mean she makes friends but only a few and three of them are Gutters (aliens). She is sarcastic and rude and often offends people with her words. Yet she is also compassionate and caring. A weird mix, but one that works for this book. Even though she didn’t always recognize it, she had a strict moral code of honor. Which led to some interesting scenes in this book. ;).

Her ‘cultural partner’ is one of the sutho. Or one of the alien royalty who’s future job is executioner. So of course he is kind of a jerk who also doesn’t make friends easily. Yet Victoria and him bond over a similar past and a similar mannerism. She also becomes friends with the other two sutho pretty easily. Which is good for her as they seem to want to protect her throughout most of the book. 

This book seemed to have it all. The weird alien parts, the danger, romance, plot twists, and a secret that will ruin Victoria’s dreams for the future. 

The author did a very good job of dragging me into her book and holding me captive with her words and characters. This is one of those books that you can’t stop reading and will most likely do an all-nighter just to get to the last chapter. I would definitely recommend this book to any lover of sci-fi and romance!
