My Daylight Monsters

My Daylight Monsters

Sarah Dalton2013
I always thought my demons came out in the day, rather than at night. I've never been scared of the dark. I've only ever been scared of real things: getting ill, having injections, physical pain... death. Those are my monsters, not ghosts or vampires or whatever else can hide under your bed at night. I was wrong. The dark makes everything worse. When Mary's psychiatrist advises a short stay at a psychiatric unit, her worst nightmares are confirmed. How can she get better in a place that fills her with dread? When she meets the other patients, she begins to gather some hope, until she realises that the death toll in the hospital is rising without explanation. Something sinister stalks the corridors and maybe she is the only one who can stop it... Mary has to confront the Things that she sees if they are to stand a chance. But will she survive a confrontation with death itself?

As seen on Caity Reads. I loved this novella. Even though it's very short, there was a lot of interesting and creepy things packed into this novella. I've never read a book set in a psychiatric ward before and I thought it was very well done. I absolutely loved Dalton's writing style. The hospital and the characters were described very vividly. I was able to imagine the setting, the characters, and the things happening in the book, which definitely added to the eerie feeling you get while reading this book. You just get a really creepy vibe from this book (for good reason) and I'm glad I read it in the day time (haha!). The pacing of this novella is especially great. You jump right into things, and it doesn't stop until the end; it was fantastic. I've found that a lot of times while reading shorter novels or novellas, you don't always get to connect or learn as much about the setting or the characters. That definitely was not a problem in this novella. I really loved the characters in this story. I thought they were unique and well done, and I especially liked the main character, Mary. I thought it made it very interesting that even though she really did not want to be in the psychiatric ward, she understood that it was something she needed to do. I also really loved her roommate, Lacey. She was very outgoing and outspoken, and I think she added a lot to the story. They develop a friendship within a few days, and it's fantastic. They get along really well, they're able to laugh and joke, which I think is important considering they are in a psychiatric ward. I really enjoyed this novella and I can't wait to pick up the sequel. I can't wait to find out what happens to Mary. The one downside to the sequel is that I'm not sure it involves anyone from the ward (side note: Do not read the synopsis for the sequel until you finish this novella, the synopsis does spoil this novella). Which is unfortunate, but I will still be picking it up.
