I've been interested in, and intimidated by, organza embroidery for a while now, so I was excited to see a book for beginners on how to get into it. Godfrey provides patterns that range in size and complexity to introduce stitchers to working with organza. Chapter 1 introduces the basic tools and materials needed to make organza hoop art. The list is fairly standard for any embroidery-based art. Chapter 2 is the stitch glossary, with illustrated instructions for 10 stitches that are used throughout the book. I feel like there were a couple of stitches that could have used a little more explanation. Seed stitch, for example, could have used a little more instruction showing how you're supposed to fill in a space with seed stitch and multiple thread colors. The glossary just shows how to do one color and when it's used in a later pattern, there aren't really enough in progress photos to illustrate how the second color is added in. I was surprised that at no point in Chapter 1 or 2 was there any instruction on how to transfer the pattern or even really how to hoop the fabric. If this book is really supposed to be usable by people who have never embroidered before, there really should have been more set-up information. As is, it's more suitable for people reasonably familiar with embroidery who might want to branch out to a slightly more intimidating fabric. Chapter 3 then has all the project patterns. Godfrey is clear about what order to stitch in to make it easiest to cover up loose ends and fill in spaces effectively, which is honestly the most useful aspect of these patterns. Organza is intimidating because it's not super forgiving - the back has to be just as neat as the front. Having a clear order of stitching to follows makes it easier. Overall, I think this is a good book for intermediate embroiderers looking to branch out their skills a little, but I wouldn't recommend this for beginners who have little or no experience with embroidery.
