A Court of Frost and Starlight A Court of Thorns and Roses Book 4
Reviews

A Court of Frost and Starlight, a novella that bridges the intense events of A Court of Wings and Ruin with the anticipated next chapter in the lives of Feyre, Rhysand, and their friends. Set in the aftermath of the brutal war that reshaped Prythian, this was nice to get to see things a little differently outside of the chunky books from the first 3 editions in the series!
The plot is intimate and character-driven, focusing on Feyre’s journey toward rediscovering joy and purpose after the immense sacrifices she endured. Alongside her, Rhysand provides a deeply emotional counterbalance, offering glimpses into his own burdens as High Lord and as Feyre’s unwavering partner. Other members of the Inner Circle—Cassian, Mor, Azriel, and Amren—each have their moments to shine, and their relationships evolve in subtle, poignant ways. Maas uses this quieter narrative to explore themes of recovery, love, and the strength of familial bonds. The Winter Solstice celebrations, with their warm fires, gift exchanges, and gentle teasing, invite readers into a world of comfort and closeness, making the story feel like a holiday spent with old friends.
One of Sarah J. Maas’s greatest strengths as a storyteller lies in her ability to craft vivid, evocative descriptions that transport you directly into her richly imagined world—and A Court of Frost and Starlight is no exception. Every snowfall, flickering Solstice candle, and shimmering starlit sky comes alive through her prose, creating a sensory tapestry that fully immerses the reader. Maas paints the description as if it’s a character in its own right: the twinkling lights strung across bustling markets, the frosty air laced with scents of pine and spiced wine, and the ever-present hum of life and magic that pulses through its streets.
Maas’s writing captures the emotional depth of her characters with equal care. With every glance, touch, and unspoken word, she conveys the unbreakable bonds between Feyre and Rhysand, as well as the lingering scars left by the war. Her descriptive language imbues even the smallest moments—like a shared cup of tea or a heartfelt gift—with profound meaning, reminding readers why these characters have become so beloved, and I have loved spending time with them!
A Court of Frost and Starlight is a gift to fans of the A Court of Thorns and Roses series, offering a glimpse into the quieter moments that make the characters feel so real and relatable. While it may lack the high-stakes drama of its predecessors, the novella shines in its portrayal of healing, hope, and the enduring power of love. Sarah J. Maas’s lyrical, immersive writing ensures that every page feels like stepping into a winter wonderland.

i was lowkey bored but it was cutesy

Felt like a Christmas episode. Shorter than the other books. Sort of a breath of fresh air after the previous books.

what a nice break from all the grief and death in the previous books. i finished this in a little under two hours and loved every second of it! absolutely adorable moments without downplaying the events that happened not long before. i can't wait to see what happens next! :)

Struggled through this tbh. Only finished bc I wanted to read acosf

It was a bit weird to switch between all the different characters but nice reading what happens to them after the war. Also felt like a transition from rhys and feyres Story to nesta and cassians.

Nothing happened other than a Night solstice meal which was sth exactly like Christmas. What a coincidence!
Other than that, I remembered why I was cringing a lot in this series: “his hazel eyes, her sharp brown eyes,” etc. Though this book served as an escape from all the bad news that are suffocating me in real life.

It was okay, nothing extravagant

It was a nice little novella for the first three books

This was more of a short story. A chilled intermission between books, which I kinda enjoyed. But mother cauldron help me, if I read ‘my mate’ one more time…

Fluff. Whateveerrrr I know it moves the story further. It was fine.

It's more of a filler/bonus book, but I enjoyed it! A nice, light, slice of life chapter of acotar

shouldn’t have been it’s own book. actually mad I spent money on it

listened to this while hand sewing my current creative project. it's a holiday filler episode.

rhysand is on my nerves. that's all.

Very cute and interesting but like ?? was it needed ?? I do love a good filler chapter and setting the tone but a whole book ? I want the drama and fights and wars and arguments not cute stuff :(

Enjoyable, but not as absorbing as the other books in the series. It felt like a bit of a filler book.

I just can’t get behind this book. It was boring and I only kept with it because I heard book 5 was good. But I’m sad I wasted time reading this plotless, pointless, redundant book.

No need

very cute very wholesome

Ah yes, if Hallmark made a Christmas special for ACOTAR 😏
It’s a palette cleanser after the heaviness of the other books. You could skip it if you wanted- no real information is given in this book that makes it pertinent to the series.
Highlights

To the stars who listen, Feyre.
I brushed a hand over his cheek to wipe away the last of his tears, his skin warm and soft, and we turned down the street that would lead us home. Toward our future- and all that waited within it.
And To the dreams that are answered, Rhys.
aawh man i’m crying

She smiled broadly. Bright as the full moon, lovelier than any star.

He'd seen Nesta in that particular pose, too. He called it her I Will Slay My Enemies pose.
Cassian had named about two dozen poses for Nesta at this point. Ranging from I Will Eat Your Eyes for Breakfast to I Don't Want Cassian to Know I'm Reading Smut. The latter was his particular favourite.

"I love you," he breathed. "More than life, more than my territory, more than my crown."

“She loves you—in a way I’ve never seen anybody love anyone.”
cassian i love yoh

We had both fought for that love, bled for it. Rhys had died for it.

She could barely stand to hear the crack and pop of the wood. Had barely been able to endure it in Feyre’s town house. Snap; crunch.
How no one ever remarked that it sounded like breaking bones, Iike a snapping neck, she had no idea.
Oh my God. Nesta’s going through it. 💔

Even an immortal's lifetime of painting wouldn't be enough to capture every facet of him. Of us.
I lifted my eyes to his again and found stars and darkness waiting. Found home waiting.
Never enough. Not to paint him, know him. Eons would never be enough for all I wanted to do, see with him. For all I wanted to love him.
The painting shone before me: Night Triumphant- and the Stars Eternal.

Because this Solstice... it was her birthday. Twenty-one years old.
It hit me for a moment, how small that number was.
My beautiful, strong, fierce mate, shackled to me-
"I know what that look means, you bastard," Cassian said roughly, "and it's bullshit. She loves you- in a way I've never seen anybody love anyone."
"It's hard sometimes," I admitted, staring toward the snow-coated field outside the house, the training rings and dwellings beyond it, "to remember that she picked it. Picked me. That it's not like my parents, shoved together."
Cassian's face turned in characteristically solemn, and he remained quiet for a moment before he said, "I get jealous sometimes. I'd never begrudge you for your happiness, but what you two have, Rhys..." He dragged a hand through his hair, his crimson Siphon glinting in the light streaming through the window. "It's the legends, the lies, they spin us when we're children. About the glory and wonder of the mating bond. I thought it was all bullshit. Then you two came along."

When I could finally speak again, I pulled away. "I've been thinking.”
"Should I be worried?"
I slapped his boots, and he laughed, deep and rasping, the sound curling around my core.
I showed him my palms, the eye in both of them.
'I want these changed.!"
"Oh?"
"Since you're no longer using them to snoop on me, I figured they could be something else."
He set a hand on his broad chest.
“ I never snoop.”
"You're the greatest busybody I've ever met."
Another laugh. "And what, exactly, do you want on your palms?"
I smiled at the paintings I'd done on the walls, the mantel, the tables.
Thought of the tapestry I'd bought. “I want a mountain -with three stars.” The Night Court insignia. "The same that you have on your knees."

Before I could elbow him, Rhys kissed me again, breathless and swift. To the stars who listen, Feyre.
I brushed a hand over his cheek to wipe away the last of his tears, his skin warm and soft, and we turned down the street that would lead us home. Toward our future—and all that waited within it.
To the dreams that are answered, Rhys
This is their iconic quote

It was then that I realized what the three different tiers had been painted to look like.
On the top: flowers. In the middle: flames.
And on the bottom, widest layer … stars.
The same design of the chest of drawers I’d once painted in that dilapidated cottage. One for each of us—each sister. Those stars and moons sent to me, my mind, by my mate, long before we’d ever met.
AAHHHHHH THAT'S SO CUTEEEE

Cassian had named about two dozen poses for Nesta at this point. Ranging from I Will Eat Your Eyes for Breakfast to I Don’t Want Cassian to Know I’m Reading Smut. The latter was his particular favorite
He knows.... 🤭🤭🤭

We eased through the densely packed heart of the Palace, passing beneath a latticework of faelights just beginning to twinkle awake overhead. From a slumbering, quiet place inside me, the painting name flitted by. Frost and Starlight.
Book name said In the book finally

“Build a house with a garden for Elain, a training ring for the Illyrian babies, a library for Amren, and an enormous dressing room for Mor.”

Before I could elbow him, Rhys kissed me again, breathless and swift. To the stars who listen, Feyre.

Because this Solstice..it was her birthday. Twenty-one years old.
WAIT WHAT I never realized how young Feyre actually was

"Id hate for you llyrian babies to miss me."

"How even if we have a thousand years together, I will never tire of this."
