almost dropped it at paragraph 1 but when I realized WHY it was so badly written I was all in. Such a good short story, the pacing was perfect and the writing lovely

this very short novella captures how it feels to be 20 something with a meh job, no money, living in the city with a dream to do "things other than the things they are doing now".

Had this story been described as vampire fiction for millennials, I would not have read it. Yet that is what this story is, and it is excellent. McCarry captures the frustrations of 20s somethings of a particular generation trying to make that last leap into adulthood exceptionally well, and uses the older, wiser vampire as an interesting way of playing off that dynamic. It's a slow, but interestingly constructed story. Not what I was expecting, but a nice surprise!
