Skipping a Beat A Novel
Reviews

There are a lot of moments of chick-lit humor, but in the end, it's a sad, real story of the things that can make two people drift apart. This was a sad read in a lot of ways, but I admire it's genuine portrayal of the imperfections of marriage. I expected the ending, but it was still told in a way that made you happy you knew what was coming because it's what you WANTED to happen. Overall, this was the best chick lit/women's fiction I've read in a while. I enjoy Pekkanen's ability to make her stories more whole than genre competitor Jennifer Weiner seems to do.

** spoiler alert ** I just don't see what all the fuss was about. I couldn't get past how shallow and money-hungry Julia was, and the more it was attempted to show why she was the way, the more shallow she seemed. So at the end (spoiler alert!) when she learns to love again, to me it felt like too little too late. And I've seen reviews where people were saying "oh the twist made me cry" - what twist???? It was just a story that was told there was no twist! I sure hope her other books are better than this...
