This book calls this out — refreshingly, in an era of everything needing to be back or white — and doesn’t conclude with a ‘good’ or ‘bad’ judgement, instead it looks at the impact of empire, the contradiction of it all and its impact on the world today… and maybe how we have real conversations.  

I loved it as a read. Sathnam Sanghera’s writing isn’t at all dense. He has wit, is opinionated, contextualises points with his own life, whilst being rigorous with the history and research. 

An essential read, especially for us British, to better engage in public discourse around climate, race, immigration, education, politics and more. I feel like I’m going to be thinking about bits of this book for years to come.
