The novel is set between the Philippines and Kuwait on a journey to search for the self, the protagonist ( Jose Filipino or Isa Kuwait ), the son of a short lived marriage between Rashid Kuwaiti Muslim, son family Tarov large and maid Philippine Christian Jozafin. The marriage is rejected by the Kuwaiti society and the resulting offspring of this marriage, Jose and his mother are left behind in the Philippines, in poverty and destitution. When Jose reaches adulthood and goes to Kuwait to meet his extended wealthy family after hearing of the death of his father in the Gulf War. Due to his Filipino heritiage his is rejected and due to the lack of acceptance he returns back to the Philippines with only the handful of soil from the grave of his father.
