one of the key points that made me give this book more than 3 stars was the one fight wilhelm has with his father in the middle of the book; about how his father never truly listens to him to understand, but to point fingers at where he is doing wrong. the root of his actions are never in his love for his son, but in disdain and selfishness. that's what made me feel pure empathy for wilhelm, the only thing he wanted from his father was a branch of hope, one question of "do you need help?", but what he got was belittling and discouraging remarks all his life. i also enjoyed the inner monologues of the character as well as the third voice depicting his thoughts, it put how detached characteristically from society he was pretty nicely, while also showing us how much he tried and yearned to be a part of it.

This was the most peculiar read. Wasn't drawn to any of the characters and it took me a while to 'get into it', but by the time the last page got turned, I nearly had to suppress tears.
