As usual the prose is lyrical, but the story was a bit too short to be really gripping.

Really glad this short story covers a big event that happened off page in the previous Wayward Children novella, 

. That is something I struggle with a bit in this series. To keep to the page count and keep a tight focus in the novellas, things get skipped or happen off-page. The author calls this a side quest, and I am really glad she decided to make it a short story so that readers can experience it. It does add a bit to some character development and give a little bit more detail to the world. I liked having a peek into the friendship dynamics between Moon, Mockery, and Lundy. In the author's note she says it is OK to read this before or after In an Absent Dream. I am not sure how much difference it makes and might depend on your preferences as a reader. I would tend to recommend reading it after. It does increase the weight and enjoyment of the novella. And knowing the context from the novella makes this short story more emotional.
