I got in trouble once in junior high for making fun of the way a girl talked. Our teacher overheard and put me in the corner, facing the wall. For someone who never got in trouble, never got a detention, that was bad enough. But then it came back ten fold in high school. For a whole year, I was hated, ostracized because everyone chose to believe lies that one girl told. Even people who I thought knew me well enough to see that they were lies. The hate faded and by the time I graduated, people had forgotten but I haven't. I will forever hate high school.

I can't imagine being hated or ignored year after year. I watched Shane Koyczan's TedTalk and it brought tears to my eyes. He was one of the lucky one. He found a way to deal. But what about those kids who don't? It breaks my heart every time I hear about a kid committing suicide because they believe what others tell them - that the world is better off without them. And now that I have children of my own, I worry that I won't be able to protect them. Reading this poem made me realize I can arm them so they can protect themselves. This book is inspiring. The artwork is beautiful and the words are powerful. I highly recommend watching Shane's video first. This book will resonate that much stronger.
