The Couple Next Door

A Novel

got thru this book dreadingly but didn't finish the last chapter. i just despised the characters, the plot was formulaic,, the writing was juvenile. i don't care about the ending once the big twists at the end started and the book picked up i was still annoyed i read this.

A couple leaves their six month old baby alone at home while they’re next door having dinner. Baby goes missing. And thus begins a frantic search that along the way, unravels long buried secrets and lies of a seemingly perfect family. It was enough to be captivating, readable and page-turning, I’ll admit but when you take away the frantic pace, it’s got nothing left. It’s just a convoluted hot mess. I wished the author explored the characters more but it felt like she just threw random pieces together for everything to make sense. In the end, it really was just about finding out the truth. This is my second novel from Shari Lapena, the first one being The Stranger In The House and I guess it’s safe to say I won’t be looking forward to her next releases.

AN INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER Shari Lapena’s new thriller, AN UNWANTED GUEST, is available now! “The twists come as fast [as] you can turn the pages.” —People “Provocative and shocking.” —Lisa Gardner, New York Times bestselling author of Find Her “I read this novel at one sitting, absolutely riveted by the storyline. The suspense was beautifully rendered and unrelenting!” —Sue Grafton, New York Times bestselling author of X It all started at a dinner party. . . A domestic suspense debut about a young couple and their apparently friendly neighbors—a twisty, rollercoaster ride of lies, betrayal, and the secrets between husbands and wives. . . Anne and Marco Conti seem to have it all—a loving relationship, a wonderful home, and their beautiful baby, Cora. But one night, when they are at a dinner party next door, a terrible crime is committed. Suspicion immediately lands on the parents. But the truth is a much more complicated story. Inside the curtained house, an unsettling account of what actually happened unfolds. Detective Rasbach knows that the panicked couple is hiding something. Both Anne and Marco soon discover that the other is keeping secrets, secrets they've kept for years. What follows is the nerve-racking unraveling of a family—a chilling tale of deception, duplicity, and unfaithfulness that will keep you breathless until the final shocking twist.

The first half was gripping. I couldn’t put it down. We find out the plan halfway through, which is sort of a surprise. Definitely formulaic but still intriguing. I still wanted to know what happened at the end. But at the halfway point I called the thing about the father in law. Then as Cynthia’s role played out, I kinda caught on to what her role might have been. After all, the book is called The Couple Next Door. I was pretty spot on about the father in law though. I’m glad justice was served at the end, but I wasn’t expecting the plot twist with 5 minutes left in the book. Side note: Marco is a freaking idiot.

The twists in the last 100 pages made me laugh out loud

I had zero clue how this one was going to end. I actually loved the multiple povs in the chapters and not divided by chapter. It kept you on your toes. But I did not want to put this one down

Not very well written, craft-wise, but the plot kept me engaged the whole way through.

Although the writing was basic and kind of juvenile, the story was a twisty, gripping, wild ride.

finished in one night bc i couldn’t put it down, lowkey corny writing but not bad at all for my first proper suspense thriller novel

I loved this book. That being said, there’s a lot going on. I don’t think everyone would like this. There’s a lot going on within a short amount of pages. It’s a beach read in my opinion and the effect is the best if you read it all in a short amount of time. Try to pick it back up after putting it down a month ago? You’ll probably be lost.

i’m torn on this one it was a 4 star read for me for about 75% of the story but the ending felt lackluster to me, especially the final ending. so overall it’s probably around a 3.5 maybe?
- that being said this was very hard to put down, and i am personally not big on thrillers, but i devoured this in a day
- i thought the intricate relationships between characters were quite well done (again, up until towards the end)
- the blurb on this book says that “people are capable of almost anything” and yeah these people have no scruples whatsoever
- i might’ve found the ending to be lacking bc i figured out a part of who the possible culprit (well, one of them) could be so who knows? also i think that last chapter could’ve either not existed at all or simply been handled differently idk
- also how pathetic is the husband he was so annoying 🙄

3/5 stars.

pretty enjoyable, yes. gripping? not really. this book just has quite a lot of "ow shit" moment. but overall it was predictable. i didn't care much of the characters.

This book was amazing. It had me on the edge of my seat. I highly recommend.

I sure did lose a lot of sleep staying up late reading this!

This book kept me on my toes throughout the book. I was constantly trying to figure out the twist and which way it was going. The twist on who did it was great, the ending was terrible and ruined it for me.

very meh, & anne's a dumb bitch

whole thing would've been 200 pages shorter if she just called that damn police officer

also makes 0 sense how margot or wtv he's called got NO sort of punishment for his absolutely careless, selfish and stupid actions

2.5, took forever to finish

Book #121 Read in 2016
The Couple Next Door by Shari Lapena

This was a good mystery/thriller book. Anne and Marco's baby daughter is kidnapped. Who has her? Who is involved? This book has many twists and turns to keep readers engaged and a host of dysfunctional characters to keep it interesting. While an adult book, I think high school readers would enjoy it too. I highly recommend it.

This book was great! I had heard it was good, and it came up available on digital loan from the library, so I started it thinking it would be a good read for a plane trip. Wow - the twists and turns kept coming, and I didn't see any of them in advance! Great book if you enjoy a good mystery and psychological thrillers.

I don’t like the ending and the characters were annoying the only okay character was Anne’s mum other than that I liked the plot and the twists and turns m
