She Was the Storm

At its core, She Was The Storm is a collection of brief, empowering statements and affirmations - the kind you might stumble across while mindlessly scrolling through social media feeds. Stripped of context or deeper narrative, these few lines per page aim to inspire strength, resilience and solidarity through sheer repetition of uplifting sentiments.

However, the utter lack of uniqueness or fresh perspectives is what ultimately undermines the impact of this poetry collection. When such encouragements can be readily found for free across the internet, one can't help but question the necessity of containing them within a published book. There's no denying the positive intentions behind the messages, but their delivery falls frustratingly flat.

What could have elevated this work is if the poet had imbued these familiar affirmations with new creative flair or personal insights. Instead, we're left with a seemingly random assortment of matter-of-fact statements that don't linger long in one's thoughts. It becomes the literary equivalent of background noise - lyrics you've heard too many times to be moved by them anymore. In attempting to motivate through brevity, She Was The Storm sacrifices substance and memorability. And that, unfortunately, is decidedly "meh."

Well... speaking of Instagram-poetry... According to the author’s note this is supposed to be encouraging, but I found found it mostly repetitive, a little depressing and slightly mind-numbing. I think the broken-hearted might relate to it, but it feels hollow to me. It’s not for me.

I really loved this book in the beginning. It had some amazing pieces (although short) but as I read on it was nothing original and seemed to me like cliche and fortune cookie sayings. Disappointed to say the least
