I love mermaids. I've always loved mermaids. Dark, scary sirens or nice, sweet mermaids - I love them all. The cover and the concept sounded so interesting to me that I had to give it a whirl. But, honestly, I wasn't all that impressed with the content. While the characters are very human, the main character Adri spends literally the whole book devaluing herself. It was a massive pity fest and, honestly, it made it hard to care after a while. Every aspect of her life is sad and terrible and the author wants you to feel sorry for her the whole book. In fact, most of the book is devoted to how sad and miserable her life is. The mermaid aspects only plays into the story occasionally.

Honestly, this story reminded me of Cinderella in a lot of ways, except without the main character being an optimist and without the royal wedding at the end. But, unfortunately, it just didn't sell it for me. I came expecting mermaids and I got them, but every page left me wanting more depth to the main character that I just never felt I got. It's not pleasant to have to pity a character for a full book.

It was an okay story, but it's not something I'd recommend to others.

A mermaid haunts Adrianne's dreams . . . but are its strange warnings for good or evil? When Adrianne comes face-to-face with the mermaid of Windwaithe Island, she is convinced that it means her and the Windwaithers harm. After all, the island is steeped in stories of mermaids' curses and ill-luck. But Adrianne is fierce-willed and courageous and is determined to protect her family and the islanders from danger. When her neighbours find out about Adrianne's encounters with the mermaid, she is more in peril than she could ever have imagined. They believe that, once active, the mermaid cannot be quieted until an islander is sacrificed to the sea.

The book wasn’t really about mermaids but more about the protagonist’s struggles in life. Dealing with the loss of her father, living with a toxic aunt, feeling unappreciated etc. It’s still a pretty enjoyable read and the descriptions of the underwater world of the merfolks were stunning. 4 STARS ⭐️
