Interestingly enough, this was the first poetry I found I ever really enjoyed. I’ve never really been big on poetry, but the playful whimsy of Silverstein’s poems made me smile and I grew to enjoy it. And also his illustrations! Odd though they may be, you cannot claim he doesn’t have a distinct style. As I read this again as a 28 year old adult, I found it was still mostly geared toward children, but several of the poems are still relevant to what we deal with as adults. In a humorous way, of course, but it addresses common adulthood stressors. This book is also laden with puns. I wonder if this is what started me down the path of believing that puns are the best sort of humor because it’s hard to offend others with them aside from the inevitable groan of having to listen to a good pun.
