Oh my word! What made me think that I would want to read (listen to) a blow by blow account of war, battles and blood? But if that's what you want; if you want every tiny thing about the civil war that has ever been recorded; if you want every battle that was repulsed or won by this side or that; then this for sure is your source. I will stop at Vol. 1.

The only thing I liked was the fashion reports on the various generals or other officers who stuck in an ostrich feather or some other sort of ridiculous finery in their tattered hat amongst the starving, expendable soldiers.

This is one of the best books about the Civil War that I've ever read. The narrative is smooth and detailed yet not overly academic. The audiobook narrator is decent aka not off-putting. That's a definite plus in my book. Foote includes a tremendous amount of detailed information, most of which I already knew yet didn't care because of how Foote wove it into his narrative. I wish I had paid more attention while I was listening so that I could give thus book the review it deserves. I highly recommend it.

A Narrative. Fredericksburg to Meridian

I have to admit that I did not pay as close attention to this audiobook as I could have and thus did not glean as much from this book as I could have. Everything I said about the first volume applies to the second volume. (I do not have access to the audiobook version of the third volume so a review of that volume will have to wait until I get my hands on the print version.) This is outstanding work of historical narrative. I strongly recommend it.
