Se spune ca Frankenstein a fost scris într-un timp record de catre Mary Shelley, scriitoare cunoscuta, ea însasi, sotia poetului Shelley, unul dintre cei mai importanti poeti englezi din secolul al XIX-lea. Este povestea horror a ucenicului vrajitor (Dr. Frankenstein), care nazuieste sa-si egaleze maestrul (Dumnezeu) si este depasit de propria isprava. În acelasi timp, este povestea celui care, singur fiind si însingurat, poate deveni un monstru în societatea care, pe buna dreptate, nu-l întelege, îl respinge si se teme de el.
