Alina and Mal's adventure continues in this second book when they try to find a second power amplifier. This time majority of the adventure is in the water. Yes, this is a predictable and simple story, but I liked it so much. Sometimes simpler is better.

somehow enjoyed this more than s&b simply because there's less of the darkling ajdlkfajlwe but also disliked the pacing. it took me a while to finish this because there was barely anything happening despite already being halfway through the book and it was literally only in the last chapter (or last 2 chapters) where it started moving along. 

happy to have finally been introduced to nikolai, though. he seems like a lot of fun and i'll probs read the books centered around him, too.

(2.5/5) dejando de lado los primeros y los últimos dos capítulos, para mí este libro se sintió como un gran vacío en el que nada sucedía en ningún momento. entiendo que es "la calma antes de la tormenta" y que Bardugo intentó instalar un escenario tenso en el que nunca se sabía que iba a suceder, pero debo admitir que muchas de las escenas lo único que lograron fue aburrirme o tenerme gritando 5 minutos seguidos acerca de lo mucho que odio a Mal. creo que un poco lo que me sucedió a mí es que el libro está escrito de tal forma en que no siempre vemos a los personajes en acción, sino que la autora nos cuenta lo que estuvieron haciendo (como en una situación en la que Alina decía que había estado buscando información sobre el pajarraco este de fuego y como encontrarlo, pero en ningún momento la vimos hacerlo).

literalmente lo único que no me hizo darle a este libro una puntuación aún más baja fue Nikolai🛐, porque absolutamente todos estamos de acuerdo en que es el mejor personaje de este libro y todas las escenas en las que aparece (sobre todo aquellas en las que no está Mal para cagarla siendo celoso como la m*erda o no dejando a Alina tomar sus propias decisiones) son increíbles. también me gustó la trama política (que espero siga en aumento porque es otra de las mejores cosas del libro) y los personajes de Tamar y Talya.

por último debo añadir que me gusta un poco que Alina tenga un conflicto consigo misma dado que no entiende si es "buena" o si se está contagiando de la oscuridad del oscuro (?). creo que sería un personaje gris bastante interesante y me gustaría que este conflicto se siguiera explotando en el siguiente libro.

Not my favorite book, but I definitely loved the last 50 pages! I really like the world and storyline, but I just don't like the characters that much. Also, I don't see why no one likes Mal and I personally find Alina really annoying haha. I am curious to see how the final book will wrap up the story and I'm definitely excited to see the show on Netflix!

re-read 2018:
I enjoyed this more the second time around, which has been my case with all the books I've re-read this year! I gotta say, the middle still feels too long but I still enjoyed all of it. This time around I found Mal to be way more annoying than Alina, which I think is interesting. Nikolai is still the cutest and I love him. I don't quite remember what happens in the last book but I'm pumped to find out!

I think the middle was too long and Alina is pretty dang annoying 90% of the time but THAT ENDING. WHOA.
But I'm confused because I'm still in love with the Darkling? And I'm also pissed that Mal and Alina aren't doing so well? And can I just take a moment to talk about how much I freaking love Nikolai?! I LOVE HIM. Man. I don't have a single clue how this series is going to end and I LOVE that! Jumping into the 3rd book now.

Here we are, at book number 2 in the Grishaverse.
And it was both so much better and so much worse than the first one. I am confused, mesmerized, and kind of wind-swept.
Let’s start off with things that did not really work for me:
- Not enough Darkling. He is the tension, the chemistry, the plot, the everything in this story. He pretty much steals the show within 3 seconds that he shows up. Forget the others, give me more Darkling.
- The weird love hexagon thing. Must all males be in love with the protagonist for the plot to move forward? No. But will it be done anyways? Yes.
- The pacing. It started all right, but it crawled to halt by the middle. So slow. So, so slow.
- NOT ENOUGH DARKLING.

But… Here are the things I loved:
- This book just went there: it was deeper, darker, and just messy with emotions. It really didn’t give a crap about stomping on my emotions or mental well-being, and I respect that. Good stuff.
- The larger scope of the world-building
- Nikolai. Just everything about Nikolai.
- The soft giant Tolya and the bad-ass Tamar
- THE ENDING. Holy crap.

I was having high hopes for this one to be a lot better but I’m disappointed. Nothing much happened besides a few chapters in the beginning and passed page 300. Alina has had some character improvement which I like but Mal?😐👎boo. It was only interesting when the darkling showed up but the rest of the info is all war planning and talking. I REALLY HOPE THE THIRD ONE PULLS IT ALL TOGETHER PLEASE I WANT TO LOVE THIS SERIES 😩

Siege and Storm: 3.5/5

Siege and Storm is the second book in the Grishaverse Trilogy, the first being Shadow and Bone. The writing in this installment drastically improved from Shadow and Bone. 

I was really wary because the beginning took off like a rocket, but suddenly, the middle tanked pacing wise. This was really tough to get through. I liked meeting Nikolai but everything really seemed to be dragged out. I was so disappointed because it started out so promising, but THEN.... THE ENDING LIKE 7-ish CHAPTERS HAPPENED. 

What a WHIRLWIND.

The ending third of Siege and Storm is so worth getting through the slow parts. I wish the whole book was this fast-paced because I genuinely could not put this down, but you can't win them all. I went through all sorts of emotions AND EVEN SHED A TEAR. I am so excited to pick up Ruin and Rising now, but my expectations have been raised.

Oh my gosh! As much as I love S&B, I can't say the same for this book. I feel that it isn't important. The only important parts are in the 1st few chapters and the last 2 chapters! It does not have to be toooooooo looooooong! It's dragging (drag you to reading slump), exhausting, and I find it too hard to finish (I've already decided to DNF this if it wasn't for the 3rd book really)!

           I rarely ever give a book anything less than 3 stars but this book really didn’t do it for me. I read it all the way through, and do plan on continuing the series, but there was just so much about the book that pissed me off and made me want to give up. 
Let me start off by saying that I love the author. I love her writing style, story structure, etc. and I had no qualms about those aspects with this novel. This book was in no means poorly written. What was difficult and annoying were the characters. 
Mal and Alina, the two protagonists of this trilogy and story, were probably some of the most annoying characters in a book I’ve ever read. Hell, I liked Zoya more than Mal. And I’m supposed to hate Zoya. Mal was whiny for the entire book, and was exactly as the Darkling described him: a jealous fool who was threatened by Alina’s new power. All Mal wanted the entire time was the “old Alina” which was an especially annoying thought when he didn’t even LIKE the old Alina until she became important to someone else. He was consistently jealous over stupid things and instead of being concerned for Alina’s well being and the war going on, he was mad that the prince was making heart eyes are her (AND HE was the one to kiss another person, yikes.)
Then Alina feeds into it. Since the book is through her POV, readers get an inside look at her thought process. Half of the time, she ends up being successfully gaslit by Mal and ends up victim blaming herself for being the problem in their relationship. I get it, they’re new. But there was just so much wrong, it felt like I was reading about a toxic, abusive relationship and that it was romanticizing it?
On top of that mess, we got what has probably been the coolest character in the trilogy to date pinning over Alina in the smoothest way possible. The privateer/prince actually seemed like a total catch, and they seemed to click and get along way more than Mal and Alina ever did. From the very beginning of the first book, all that dynamic was about was Alina self doubting herself and always thinking she isn’t good enough for Mal. But the moment this new guy, or even the Darkling, appears it’s like readers can FEEL just how much more confident she is simply being around them. She never doubts herself. 
I read this series wanting to feel like Alina was a strong—yet human and relatable—female character. But her victim mentality thoughts on Mal just continuously made her feel so weak to me. 
I pretty much only read books with romance. And this was one book I felt I actually would have enjoyed BETTER if there was none at all. Badass pirates, world at war, amazing heroine trying to raise an army to stop her enemy? Sign me up. But Mal and Alina’s romance plot totally overshadowed all the good in this story. 
And don’t get me wrong, I liked Mal and Alina in the first book. And I know they’re end game so I hope they get through this. But damn. I hope he’s less of a whiny, jealous prick in Ruin and Rising. 
(Love all the new characters, love that David got more lines, and love Nikolai’s introduction and character throughout. I usually love the second book in trilogies but hopefully the next one beats this out.)
