At first I thought that I really enjoyed this book. Even through the end, I did actually enjoy the reading of the book and learned a lot from it. However, Winchester lost the narrative thread so many times throughout the book that I cannot give this book four stars. Some chapters discuss the titular map and the creation of the map. Some chapters talk about Smith, the creator of the map, and his life difficulties. Some chapters branch off into full scale geology textbook type discussions of strata and rock type. Every type of chapter engaged me. However, Winchester did not weave them together in a coherent manner, hence the three stars rather than four.
