This extract from The Second Sex really makes you think and gives you the desire to read the entire book. I am not sure I understood every argument that were made through the book because it is quite dense. It is not at all story-like, you really have to focus on what you are reading to understand it. I think I will need to read it again to really grasp her thoughts. However, I observed that some aspects, not all as we’ve accomplished a lot, of De Beauvoir’s analysis were still relevant today as, as we all know, women and men are not yet equal in the world. She doesn’t only criticise the way women and men have been raised, but she also suggests solutions in her conclusion. Through this extract, I thought the main argument was that the independence of women will also bring the independence of men and that is why, they should all start giving the same chances to both sexes. The responsibility is shared, it is not just the men’s fault. She argues that women should not go the easy way, but should fight the temptation and continue their studies, continue to search for their independence.
