The writing was good, and you can feel the passion. But the story and characters...

The author wrote good hooks for the characters and left it at that, hoping that the hooks would propel them through the story. There was no sense of bonding. They moved from one set piece to the next. Each character doing their one task, and performing their one trait.
It also seems that the only way the author gives his characters their personalities, is through suffering. It's tiring, listening to trauma after trauma. Even in the darkest times, there is joy to be found - but not here. It doesn't feel real.

The story. Nearly every action taken by the gang is prophesied to them - and to us. And every time, the prophesy is correct. There are no stakes, because we're told constantly what's going to happen. There are so many characters that speak in portentious winks and nudges - the world is lousy with damned prophets!
It's made clear that the story is on rails to a set destination -well duh, it's a story-, but it's not fun to see the rails so clearly.

The ending revelation was cool though.
