Well... I really wanted to like this book. And I can see how I might have liked this book. But... THAT scene happened and I couldn't look past that stuff any more. If you think about THAT scene (and a lot of other scenes) from Hawke's perspective only - having no knowledge of Tate's feelings, since that hasn't been communicated at all yet, as he says himself - a whole lot of this is creepy, abusive, and down-right assault. I get what Kennedy was trying to do here, I do. But you can't just blow past an action like that without confronting what was so inherently wrong about it. I know that no one is looking to these books as models for how to behave in their lives, but I really don't think it is healthy, in this day and age, to portray these kinds of actions in a sympathetic way.
